Jongyu is one of the most honest pairings in SHINee. Their charm being that they’re not too serious or too complex but there is still an underlying connection between the two of them. They joke around, they understand each other, and they look out for one another. It’s a relationship that is simple and understandable, but the true beauty of their friendship lies in that transparency.
Jongyu is an extremely supportive OTP. Being the eldest members of SHINee, I think Onew and Jonghyun understand the responsibilites they both have and the pressure they’re both under. Although Onew is the leader, he realizes that the age gap between him and Jonghyun is small and he lets Jonghyun do his own thing. Whether Jonghyun is goofing around on stage or talking too much during an interview, Onew never is “that guy” and plays the age card because he understands the position that they’re both in. Then you have Jonghyun who, despite the closeness in their age, is always secretly trying taking care of Onew and standing up for him as the leader of SHINee. I think that’s one of the most endearing things about Jongyu’s relationship - they’re so compassionate towards one another in the most subtle ways.
What I love most about Jongyu is that although Onew and Jonghyun don’t really express their feelings to each other in obvious ways, the rare moments when they do are the best. Like when Jonghyun said that Onew has a fragile heart and that he’d rather be the one being bullied to protect his hyung, or Onew saying that Jonghyun puts up a front and is actually the kindest member of SHINee. It’s enough to make me want to cry and it’s moments like that those that bring so much to the table with these two. It shows that their friendship consists of more than just them being goofballs all the time and it shows how much they really do care about each other.
They have both grown up a lot over the past five years but they still have their moments where they act like the youngest members of SHINee rather than the oldest. They may be an underrated OTP but their relationship, though subtle, is just so light-hearted and fun.
